Gerard Quinn visits Brussels this March to assess implementation of UNCRPD in the EU

The UN Special Rapporteur on the rights of persons with disabilities is in Brussels till 31st March to assess the current measures that are set in place in the EU with respect to the UNCRPD.

Making his first trip ever to the European Union as the UN Special Rapporteur on the rights of persons with disabilities, Gerard Quinn, conducts an official visit to Brussels from 21 to 31 March 2022.

The purpose of his travel to Brussels is to understand the concrete measures that are being taken by the European Union and its Member States with respect to the United Nations Convention on Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD). In doing so, the Special Rapporteur will meet experts from the European Commission, the European Parliament at the European Council, independent human rights bodies, people with disabilities and their representative organizations.

Disability rights and their implementation within the internal laws and foreign policy of the EU will be assessed by Gerard Quinn. The criteria of assessment will include highlighting key good practices as well as understanding the variety of challenges that are proving to be an impediment in the implementation of the UNCRPD. On the basis of this assessment, he will further provide recommendations to better protect the rights of people with disabilities.
