Housing as a path to inclusion and independent living

On 4 June, EASPD submitted its contribution to the European Commission’s consultation on the upcoming European Affordable Housing Plan, an initiative announced by the EU’s first-ever Commissioner for Housing, Dan Jørgensen. This plan, expected in 2026, has the potential to address the current housing crisis affecting millions across Europe, including persons with disabilities.
This initiative has the potential to be a transformative lever for inclusion, social justice, and the realisation of fundamental rights, including the right to live independently and be included in the community.
EASPD believes housing is a critical element in the process of deinstitutionalisation. Many individuals remain in hospitals, institutions or temporary accommodations due to the absence of accessible, affordable homes within the community. This issue adds to a lack of accessibility of mainstream services and fragmented support systems.
