Assistive technology enables people to participate fully in society, live more independently, and pursue their goals. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), more than 2.5 billion people worldwide currently need at least one assistive product, a figure expected to rise to 3.5 billion by 2050. Assistive technology includes both the products people use and the systems and services that help them choose, access and use those products effectively. From wheelchairs, hearing aids and communication devices to digital solutions powered by artificial intelligence, these technologies support communication, mobility, learning, employment, independent living and social inclusion.

Despite significant innovation and growing opportunities, access to assistive technology remains unequal. Effective access requires more than the availability of products alone. It depends on a well-functioning assistive technology ecosystem that brings together users, service providers, policymakers, researchers, industry and civil society to ensure that appropriate technologies are available, affordable and supported throughout people's lives.

Through this study, EASPD explores the role of independent assistive technology centres within the broader assistive technology ecosystem, the main service models, apparent barriers and evolving role.
