Promoting Inclusive Education with the Lighthouse Network in Madrid

On 30-31 October EASPD’s Member Forum on Education participated in a Lighthouse Network study visit to COCEMFE in Madrid.

On 30-31 October, Members of EASPD’s Member Forum on Education participated in a Lighthouse Network study visit to Madrid, Spain. Organised and hosted by COCEMFE, a Spanish NGO supporting individuals with physical and organic disabilities, the two-day visit aimed to foster cross-national collaboration and share promising practices in inclusive education.

The first day of the visit began with a tour of Villar Palasí, an inclusive school dedicated to creating a safe and respectful learning environment for all. Participants from France, Belgium, Slovakia, and Bulgaria toured the school and gained insights into Spain’s education system as well as the school’s inclusion initiatives. These initiatives include conflict resolution programmes, team-building activities, and diversity-themed days to promote  a welcoming and supportive atmosphere for all students.

In the afternoon, the group engaged in a hands-on workshop on Universal Design for Learning (UDL), exploring practical strategies to enhance accessibility and diversity in education.

The second day of the study visit focused on the work of COCEMFE. Participants learnt more about the organisation’s initiatives in education, employment, and advocacy, gaining inspiration for advancing inclusivity in their own contexts. During the workshop, participants shared experiences and ideas for implementing inclusive education across Europe, fostering a rich exchange of knowledge.
