EarlyBrain stories provide support to families and children navigating sensory sensitivities

Many children, including those with intellectual or developmental disabilities, may find it challenging to explore and adapt to new sensations and routines. This hesitation can arise from various factors, such as fear, discomfort, or sensory sensitivities.
To support caregivers in guiding their children through these everyday challenges, the EarlyBrain project has created a series of storybooks. These resources aim to enhance caregivers' understanding of their children's experiences while offering practical strategies to empower both children and families. By normalising common struggles and providing clear solutions, the stories help children and caregivers approach transitions with greater confidence and ease.
The story ‘Marta Against the Toilet’ aims to support parents and caregivers to understand and assist children with developmental disabilities to learn how to use the toilet. Marta refuses to use the toilet due to fear and sensory discomfort. Her mother helps her gradually overcome her anxiety using a reward system, adapted toilet settings and playful strategies. The story helps to achieve the following outcomes:
- Addressing sensory sensitivities related to toileting.
- The role of positive reinforcement in behaviour change.
- Recognising and validating a child’s fears before working on solutions.
- Using step-by-step desensitisation techniques.
