Early Childhood Intervention experts share insights from study visit to Fondazione Paideia

Last week, the EASPD Member Forum on Early Childhood Intervention (ECI) and some EASPD staff had the privilege of visiting Fondazione Paideia in Turin, Italy, a leading organisation dedicated to supporting children with disabilities and their families. The study visit offered a firsthand look at how innovative, family-centred approaches can transform lives. Here’s what we saw, learned, and took away from this visit.
A tour of inclusion and innovation
Our visit began with a guided walk through Fondazione Piadeia's facilities. From the moment we stepped inside, it was clear that every detail was designed with inclusion in mind. Notably, the use of pictograms and easy-to-read signage throughout the building ensures accessibility for all. The tour also showcased the wide range of activities available, including multi-sensory rooms, a swimming pool, a library and reading room, an inclusive playground, and more.
Holistic family support beyond therapy
Fondazione Paideia's work is grounded in the belief that it is essential to extend support beyond traditional therapy. This ensures children receive personalised, timely support, while families gain the tools and confidence to help their children thrive. All members of the family are involved, including grandparents and siblings. Through initiatives like organised family holidays and community-building activities, Paideia addresses the broader emotional and social needs of families.
Bringing people together: professionals, families, volunteers
One of the most striking aspects of Fondazione Paideia is its vibrant volunteer community. Over 300 volunteers play a vital role in organising activities, projects, and events. Their dedication not only enriches and sustains the support offered, but also creates a strong sense of belonging and connection. In addition, Paideia organises activities that are open to the public and bring together families with or without a child with a disability, fostering a truly inclusive and supportive community.
A sustainable financial model
Unlike many organisations that rely heavily on public funding, Fondazione Paideia sustains itself through private donations, philanthropy, heritage, fundraising events, corporate partnerships, and tenders. This model ensures long-term stability and the flexibility to innovate and adapt to the evolving needs of the families they serve.
This study visit was a truly powerful reminder of what’s possible when innovation, inclusion, and community come together.
