Check out Hi-Ability project's new toolkit for adult educators for people with intellectual disabilities

This toolkit serves as a guide for adult educators in the field of eco-tourism and environmental studies.

Very often, social and cultural actions aimed at the integration of people with disabilities tend to segregate them instead. This has negative consequences on the perception of disability towards society and is a misreading of the real needs of people with disabilities.

The Hi-Ability project wants to "open the doors to new spaces of education", promoting education for autonomy, independent and inclusive life for adult people with intellectual disabilities (PWID), in a context still not very accessible such as hiking and eco-tourism

The Hi-Ability project has published a new toolkit that acts as a guide for adult educators to be able to apply the principles of adult education in the field of environmental education and outdoor learning with vulnerable learners in order to emancipate them through approaching nature and environmental issues.

Thosewho work with people with intellectual disabilities will be able to improve their knowledge and skills in environmental and outdoor education through this toolkit.

The toolkit consists of:

  • A pedagogical and didactic framework for training methodology on outdoor and cognitive disability. The framework was created by the combination of quantitative and qualitative research methods. The analysis of all countries represented in the partnership done in the first five months of the project helped in creating the framework.
  • A supporting element of this toolkit are PowerPoint presentations which are provided to educators to deliver the session to other fellow educators.
  • An activity template which consists of instructions that the educators can use while implementing practical activities with PWIDs and also potentially help in deepening the knowledge of the toolkit via this template.
  • Open Education Resources (OERs) are also a part of the toolkit which will help in explaining the topic of the toolkit better.

The Toolkit, together with the training material, which can be adapted, updated and expanded by interested users, includes a valuable learning package ready for future use by facilitators, educators, learning communities and interested organisations.
