Building bridges to strengthen disability support

EASPD hosted 20 managers of service providers affiliated with ANCOR and designed for them a week-long training programme.

In September 2025, a delegation of 20 members from ANCOR (American Network of Community Options and Resources) successfully completed a week-long study visit to Belgium, designed to strengthen transatlantic collaboration and learn about practices in disability support services. The study visit was coordinated by EASPD in the context of the Lighthouse Network.

Key issues explored

The programme focused on international and EU legal frameworks, the EU’s institutional and policy landscape, Belgium’s innovative practices in disability support, workforce conditions and social dialogue at the EU level. Participants also examined inclusive community-based support and engaged with organisations working on disability rights and advocacy, as well as NGOs representing the support service workforce.

By combining expert-led discussions with field visits, participants witnessed firsthand how services supporting the inclusion of persons with disabilities operate, both in the community and in working environments. These sessions enabled members to exchange experiences, discuss challenges, and explore opportunities for future joint initiatives between European and American stakeholders.

Cultural exchange beyond the meetings

In addition to the professional agenda, the delegation enjoyed cultural activities and sightseeing that highlighted Belgium’s rich heritage and landmarks, strengthening personal connections and offering a deeper understanding of the country’s social and cultural context.

Building Bridges Across the Atlantic

The visit underscored the importance of sharing knowledge and practices across borders to improve services and outcomes for persons with disabilities worldwide.

“Study visits like this allows us to see innovations in action, meet peers, and build networks for future cooperation,” said an ANCOR member.

The ANCOR delegation returned to the United States with new insights into how the Belgian authorities, the EU institutions, and local service providers work together to advance disability rights and inclusive support.

EASPD wishes to thank the participants from ANCOR for their participation and active involvement during this study visit.
