A Culture of Inclusion: Enriching Lives through Arts, Sports and Leisure

This May, we will explore how support services can empower people with disabilities to access cultural, leisure, and sporting activities.

People with disabilities have the right to thrive. They should be able to look beyond basic needs and explore interests and activities, just like everyone else. This is the essence of Article 30 of the UN CRPD: participation in cultural life, recreation, leisure and sport. While access to employment, education, healthcare and social security are vital, what about the other things that also make life enjoyable, that add value? Culture, recreation, leisure and sport enrich our lives in countless ways. They create relationships, support a social life and connect people to their community. They empower people, build their confidence, and broaden their perspectives. These qualities contribute to a happier and more fulfilling life. Additionally, people with disabilities should have the opportunity to promote and showcase their abilities through these activities, demonstrating that their skills and talents are valuable and enrich society.

To implement Article 30, you must create a culture of inclusion. Communities and services need to collaborate and embrace a mindset where participation in leisure and cultural life has no barriers. From art centres to sports clubs, support service providers can play a key role in fostering a “culture of inclusion” by partnering with their local communities. This conference will focus on the activities that give colour to life. Through the sharing of good practices from around the world, we will explore how support services can empower people with disabilities to access cultural, leisure, and sporting activities and to enjoy a meaningful social life within their community. Additionally, the event will also examine the legal and policy frameworks that are needed at EU and national levels to enable service providers to fulfil their supporting role.
