Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway commit to strengthening democracy and human rights in Europe

The new EEA Civil Society Fund will support civil society organisations in promoting democratic values and civic engagement.

Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway, alongside the 27 EU Member States, form the European Economic Area (EEA), whose goal is to strengthen trade and economic relations across its member countries.

Within this framework, Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway are launching the new EEA Civil Society Fund, designed to reinforce democracy, human rights and the rule of law across Europe. This initiative represents an unprecedented effort by the Donor States to reduce social and economic disparities across the EEA countries.

At a time when democratic institutions in many European countries are facing significant and unprecedented challenges, more than €300 million will be allocated to support civil society. In particular, the Fund’s core mission will be advancing democratic values and processes in the EU, as well as developing sustainable civil society organisations.

The EEA Civil Society Fund seeks to empower and support civil society organisations advocating for democratic values, civic participation and human rights. The main target areas will include:

•    Democratic values, civic engagement, information integrity and media literacy.
•    Civil society participation in democratic processes.
•    Human rights, anti-discrimination, and social justice.
•    Gender equality, sexual and reproductive health and rights, LGBTIQ+ rights.
•    Climate action, environmental protection, green transition.

NGOs and civil society groups in eligible countries are encouraged to explore this funding opportunity and take an active role in safeguarding democracy in Europe. Application details and deadlines will be available on the EEA Grants website
