First results of the Beyond Digits research: Challenges Faced by Professionals in Teaching Financial Literacy to Neurodivergent Adults

Beyond Digits shares research on the learning needs of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities regarding financial literacy.

The Beyond Digits project, launched in October 2024, aims to promote financial literacy among neurodivergent adults, equipping them with essential money management skills to promote independence and well-being. 

In the first month of 2025, project partners conducted research on the learning gaps and needs of neurodivergent adults regarding financial literacy, as well as the challenges faced by professionals in providing training to them. This research will guide the development of the training curriculum addressing the identified gaps and challenges. This training curriculum will provide educators and trainers with the tools and knowledge to educate neurodivergent adults on financial literacy, promoting their financial independence. 

The study surveyed 19 neurodivergent adults aged 18 to 50 and 15 professionals. The results of the analysis revealed that people with developmental disorders (DD) and intellectual disabilities (DD) show significant reliance on caregivers for financial decisions and limited independence in financial decision-making, particularly with purchases and online transactions. Most participants (80%) did not manage their own income or allowance, with the majority relying on caregivers for purchasing decisions. Budgeting and understanding which expenses were seen as difficult by most of the respondents.  

On the other hand, the findings also revealed that professionals face significant constraints due to limited time, high workloads, and a lack of training resources. Proposed solutions to these challenges include developing structured, institution-wide programs, providing professional training, involving parents in the learning process, and creating tailored resources with clear goals, visual aids, and interactive tools. Flexible session formats and a combination of private and group training were also highlighted as effective strategies. The research identified key features for digital tools, such as step-by-step instructions, real-life scenarios, customisation options, and gamified elements, to enhance learner engagement and outcomes.

The research confirmed the hypotheses set out at the beginning of the study; there are considerable gaps in the financial literacy of neurodivergent adults and a lack of institutional support for professionals working with neurodivergent adults. The Beyond Digits project will aim to close these gaps with its comprehensive Training Toolkit that will include tailored training materials for people with DD/ID, including a mobile app, an educational digital game, and non-digital material and a handbook for professionals and educators working with individuals with DD/ID on how to use the specialised training materials.
