Empowering youth through inclusive volunteering

"Be a Volunteer!" hosted a week-long programme in Hungary, bringing together young people with disabilities from across Europe.

Last week, EASPD took part in a week-long programme in Hungary, hosted by the Never Give Up Foundation as part of the “Be a Volunteer!” project.

Launched in February 2024, “Be a Volunteer!” aims to empower young people with disabilities aged 16 to 30 from across Europe. Through non-formal educational methods, the project is training of young individuals and helping them to develop new skills, enhance their employability, and actively engage in volunteering within their local communities.

This programme brought together approximately 40 participants from Bulgaria, Hungary, Italy, North Macedonia, and Spain. The group included individuals with intellectual, developmental, and physical disabilities, all of whom are preparing to complete 120 hours of local volunteer service over the next nine months.

Throughout the week, participants explored several key topics, including:

  • The personal meaning and value of volunteering
  • Teamwork and how to share responsibilities
  • Different types of volunteer activities
  • Identifying personal strengths and skills
  • Defining individual learning goals and areas where support is needed

In line with the project’s emphasis on experiential learning, the programme featured a variety of engaging activities, such as games, group discussions, and role plays. These methods helped participants build confidence, form friendships, and develop a shared understanding of inclusive volunteering.
