Art competition in Portugal fosters inclusion and self-expression of artists with intellectual disabilities

Our Portuguese member APPACDM do Porto is hosting CRIDEM, a plastic arts competition for people with intellectual disabilities.

On 14 May, our General Assembly gathered in Gandía and welcomed several new members. The Portuguese APPACDM do Porto is one of them, and brings extensive experience in promoting artistic expression and inclusion.

The organisation is hosting CRIDEM, a national art competition for people with intellectual disabilities launched in 1991. This initiative focuses on the plastic arts, offering a platform for artists with intellectual disabilities to express themselves through painting, drawing, sculpture, tapestry, and more.

At its core, the competition aims to raise awareness of both the artistic talents of individuals with intellectual disabilities, and the role of art as a means for self-expression and inclusion. In addition, CRIDEM fosters the exchange of good practices among supporting organisations and acknowledges the professionals who facilitate artistic expression within these contexts. It also aims to strengthen collaboration and facilitate knowledge exchange across the social and cultural sectors.

APPACDM do Porto is now looking to expand the reach and impact of CRIDEM by building new partnerships, connecting with like-minded organisations, and encouraging broader participation at national and international levels.

Organisations interested in learning more about CRIDEM are welcome to get in touch.
